Some Asians families in US choosing sons

By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID, AP Science Writer

WASHINGTON - Having sons is important to many Asian cultures, and now American families from those groups seem to be asserting the same preference. A new analysis of the 2000 Census shows that among U.S. born children of Chinese, Korean and Asian Indian parents the odds of having a boy increase if the family already has a girl or two.

The findings "suggest that in a sub-population with a traditional son preference, the technologies are being used to generate male births when preceding births are female," co-authors Douglas Almond and Lena Edlund said of their findings, appearing in Tuesday's edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"We should emphasize that our paper does not imply that sex selection is practiced by ...

KOREAN AMERICAN ARTIST KILLED OVER VANDALISM...THE COMMUNITY NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT

This Letter was fwded from one of my good friends James of the Hip Hop group Far East Movement. I'm completely outraged that something like this can go overlooked. This was the first time I'd heard of the incident. Americans as a whole were outraged when one of our own was caned for vandalizing cars in Thailand, and our our own Police Officers GUN DOWN an Asian American for vandalism and the story is relatively unheard of?! We all need to show our support so that this story is heard. I'm still shocked by it.

Asian Americans voters face discrimination: report

ATLANTA (Reuters) - Asian American voters fear the discrimination some faced at polling stations in 2006 could resurface as they cast ballots in November's presidential election, a civil rights group said on Thursday.

Laws that enable Asian Americans from countries including China, Korea, Vietnam and the Philippines to get language and other kinds of assistance with voting were often flouted at the 2006 mid-term congressional elections, according to the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund.

The group cited examples of Asian Americans being asked to provide more identification than other citizens, in contravention of federal law. Those not on voter rolls but still eligible to vote were often not given provisional ballots to complete, it said in a report.

Under the landm ...

Hate crime or not?

Asian-Americans label angler's death racist
Fifty people attend a vigil at Montrose Harbor, where a Vietnamese fisherman drowned within seconds after being shoved into the water
By Emma Graves Fitzsimmons Tribune staff reporter
September 9, 2007

Authorities aren't calling the drowning of a Vietnamese fisherman a hate crime, but members of the Asian-American community who gathered at a vigil on Saturday said they believe he was targeted because of his race.

"There were a lot of people out at the harbor early that morning from different backgrounds. Why did the alleged perpetrator pick on those individuals?" said Ben Lumicao, an adviser on the city's Commission on Human Relations. "Everyone in the Asian-American community had the same reaction: That could have bee ...

SF Chinatown still home to young and old

By JULIANA BARBASSA, Associated Press Writer
Fri Nov 17, 3:55 AM ET

SAN FRANCISCO - Noisy, crowded and scented by the fresh herbs and dried mushrooms sold from open-air produce stands, Chinatown can seem old-fashioned to a generation hooked on iPods, cell phones and YouTube.

Yet Chinese-American teens in San Francisco have a complicated relationship with the biggest of the nation's many Chinatowns.

They might laugh at the sight of a tourist looking for bargains among the plastic Buddhas and elderly shoppers picking through bins of flopping fish, but they also see Chinatown as home — whether they live in its densely packed blocks or visit regularly from the suburbs.

"Universally, kids will seek a place of comfort," says Ben Wong, director of the Chinato ...
